The Audition Process

We are so pleased that you are interested in joining the Sacramento Children’s Chorus.
Be assured that our goal is for the audition process to be a very positive and happy
experience for all children.

The audition gives the conductor the opportunity to get to know your child and a way to
find out their musical potential. Each singer meets with the conductor individually. They
are asked to sing some simple vocal exercises, echo some rhythm and melodic patterns
and sing “My Country ‘tis of Thee”.

Most of our singers come to us with very little to no musical experience. The conductors
are looking for the singer’s ability to match pitch as well as their level of rhythmic and
melodic memory. If your child is older than 5th grade, some previous experience is
helpful but not necessary. Other than reviewing “My Country ‘tis of Thee”, there is no
preparation necessary for the audition.

Families are notified by mail / email within a couple of days as to the outcome of the
audition. Please assure your child that this is a very friendly and positive experience.

If you have a singer that would like to audition, please contact the SCC office at 916-
454-1141 or info@sacramentochildrenschorus.org.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where are rehearsals held?
The SCC rents space for rehearsals at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at
1615 Morse Ave. Sacramento, CA 95864

  • Why do I have to pay for my child to sing in a choir?
The SCC is non-profit corporation that is governed by a Board of Directors. Funds to run
the organization are raised through donations, corporate sponsorships, concert tickets,
and tuition. Tuition covers only 51% of the organization's budget.

  • Are there special clothes that my child needs for performances?
Yes. Each choir has a performance outfit that is purchased by the singer. At the
beginning of each year there is a wardrobe exchange for singers to purchase gently
used clothing.

  • Are carpools available?
The SCC does not set up carpools, but we do make rosters available the first week of
rehearsals so that you can arrange for your own carpools.

  • What is the time commitment?
The biggest commitment for all levels is to be at each and every rehearsal. The only
excused absence is illness. The busy time of the year is just before concerts. Extra
rehearsals are called as well as the time for the concert. Cantoris is often asked to
perform for private parties, to perform with the Opera or the Sacramento Choral Society
and Orchestra.
