KinderChorus is a 8 week workshop designed to provide young
children with their “first experience in singing”. Kindergarten
and 1st grade age children receive an introduction to and
possibly their first exposure to music.
Class includes activities and games that include singing, rhythm,
and movement using a curriculum based on the Kodaly model. This
teaching method incorporates singing games, movement, playing
instruments, and sharing each student’s unique voice. Also,
children are not required to audition and can simply focus on
having fun, making friends and learning the wonders of music.
KinderChorus is taught by Helen Mendenhall who has two music
degrees, one from George Fox College and one from California
State University, Chico. Ms. Mendenhall has taught music classes
for young children and private piano for thirty years.
Today’s evidence shows that children who participate in music
class at least once a week develop basic reading skills faster
and tend to have higher math, science and critical thinking
skills. Music classes develop listening skills and symbolic
thinking, as well as a means of socialization.
